Yachting Malta Birżebbuġa International Regatta 2025 Set to Attract Top Sailors
The highly anticipated Yachting Malta BSC International Regatta is set to return for another exciting edition, bringing together top young sailors for four days of intense racing. Hosted, for the fourth consecutive year, by Birżebbuġa Sailing Club Freeport, this important event will welcome competitors in the Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6 and ILCA 7 classes from both local and international sailing communities.
The regatta will feature sailors from Lithuania, Bulgaria, and Portugal, alongside the majority of Malta’s top sailors. As a key event in the local ranking series, this competition plays a crucial role in determining the Maltese sailors who will represent the country at the European Championships later this year. A select group of sailors are in contention for the final spots on the Maltese national team, making this an intense and decisive event.
Racing Conditions
Current weather forecast suggests consistent sailing conditions for most of the four-day event. Competitors can expect moderate conditions over the first three days, allowing for fair and tactical racing. However, sailors will need to adapt their strategies on the final day, as lighter winds are expected. This shift could prove challenging, particularly for those vying for top positions, making the final races even more crucial.
With the possibility of varying conditions between Marsaxlokk Bay, Bengħisa Reef, and Xrobb l-Għaġin, race officials will carefully assess the best course locations to ensure the best possible conditions.
Races will be held along a trapezoid course, with the first start scheduled for 1100hrs on Saturday.
A Major Collaborative Effort
Preparations for the event have been ongoing for weeks, with over 40 volunteers assisting with logistics, race management, and safety both onshore and on the water. Their dedication ensures a seamless experience for the sailors, officials, and supporters.
A distinguished international jury, led by Ms Pinar Koşkuner Genç, President of EUROSAF, will oversee the regatta. She will be assisted by Maltese National Judge David Dalli (BSC),. The race officials for the event will be Mr Miguel Amaral (POR), a well-respected figure in the local regatta scene, overseeing the Optimist course, and Mr Jan Niklas Czekala (GER), who will manage the ILCA course.
“The Yachting Malta BSC International Regatta promises to be a highly competitive and thrilling sailing event, which will attract high level sailors to Malta giving our sailors an excellent opportunity to gain international experience in local waters, “ commented Mario Aquilina, Commodore, Birżebbuġa Sailing Club Freeport. Aquilina went on to thank title sponsor Yachting Malta and main sponsor Visit Malta as well as the ongoing support of the Birżebbugia Local Council.
The Yachting Malta BSC International Regatta is being held under the auspices of the Malta Sailing Federation.
