Yachting Malta organised a visit for young sailors from local sailing clubs to the Alexander Von Humboldt II, a German tall sailing ship which arrived in Malta on the 12th September following an 800 nautical mile journey.
Sailors from Birzebbugia Sailing Club, Malta Young Sailors Club and Vikings Sailing Club joined the visit.
The Alexander von Humboldt II is a traditional barque rigg, driven by 24 sails with a sail area of 1.360 m2. In favourable wind conditions, she runs up to 14 knots. The ship arrived in Malta on the 12th September after an 800 nautical mile journey, for most of which the crew enjoyed perfect sailing conditions.
The cordial visit was led by Yachting Malta’s General Manager Michael Mifsud and offered the young sailors an in depth visit of the ship which including a tour of the engine room, room, bridge, crew quarters, restaurant and galley, stores and decks. Following the tour, the Captain Andreas Dahrendorf explained the purpose of the ship – that to provide traditional high seas sailing and the benefits associated with such an experience.
At the end of the visit, Mr. Mifsud, presented the Captain with a courtesy Maltese Flag and a book about Malta’s historical buildings.

About the Alexander von Humboldt II
ALEXANDER von HUMBOLDT II has been sailing the high seas since 2011. Like its predecessor ALEXANDER von HUMBOLDT, ALEX-2 is a civilian square-rigger offering tall ship voyages for everyone, regardless of previous experience. All you need is an open mind and a spirit of adventure!
While the rigging resembles that of a windjammer built 150 years ago, the safety and rescue equipment of ALEXANDER von HUMBOLDT II is absolutely up to date. Radar, radio and satellite communication, electronic charts, life rafts, two high speed dinghies and many things more make her a modern ship and easy to navigate.
ALEX-2 is owned and operated by Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training (German Sail Training Foundation / DSST), based in the barque’s homeport Bremerhaven. DSST is a non-profit, charitable organization. Its aims are to provide traditional high seas sailing for people of all ages, but especially for young men and women aged 15-25.
Yachting Malta announced its support towards the Malta Superyachts Industry Network and a number of local sailing clubs through the Euromed International Regatta which is hosted annually in Malta and organised by the Malta Young Sailors Club.
This was recently announced during a press conference held at the Royal Malta Yacht Club in the presence of Hon. Minister Dr. Konrad Mizzi, Minister for Tourism and representatives of the Superyachts Industry Network and various sailing clubs.
Yachting Malta announced two support schemes, the first being that of a contribution that will go towards the training of local sailors who will be taking part in the Euromed International Regatta to be held in December. This regatta, hosted by the Malta Young Sailors Club, always welcomes a large fleet of over 200 participants, representing some 22 different countries.
“This agreement, signed with Yachting Malta, will ensure that our sailors will be able to train on a more professional level. With this investment we will ensure that continuous investment takes place so that future generations will benefit from more opportunities” explained Hon. Mizzi
Yachting Malta presented a sponsorship to the Malta Superyacht Industry Network through which this network of Maltese businesses within the superyachts industry will be participating in the Cannes Boat Show to be held between 10 and 15 September. This support is aiming to increase and develop the industry network through participation in such international fairs which are well known events that attract world renowned boat builders, owners and crews.

Whilst sailing is becoming a fast growing sport that is attracting some very promising sailors, the superyacht industry is a niche that Yachting Malta sees a lot of potential and is working closely with the stakeholders to identify growth prospects” – commented John Huber, Chairman, Yachting Malta.

Yachting Malta hosted the Prize Giving evening of the 59th Edition of the Malta – Syracuse Race. The Race, which is hosted by the Royal Malta Yacht Club and the Lega Navale Italiana (Sezione Siracusa) is the oldest race on the Club’s racing calendar and it took place over the weekend. The evening was presided over by Mr. Godwin Zammit, Commodore, Royal Malta Yacht Club and Mr. Peter Dimech, Rear Commodore Sailing, and carried out in the presence of Hon. Dr. Konrad Mizzi, Minister for Tourism, Hon. Preservation of our seas and marine life is imperative.
Yachting Malta has announced its support towards the Wave of Change environmental initiative which will culminate this weekend, Saturday 29th June, when five swimmers will be undertaking the gruelling challenge of swimming 35km around the Island of Gozo in under 11 hours.
‘Wave of Change’ is part of the growing fight against single-use plastic that has gathered massive momentum over the past few years and consists of a campaign empowering everyone to reduce plastic waste and reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in our beautiful seas.
Yachting Malta’s affiliation to everything maritime related means that it is fully supportive of this mission and the importance of raising awareness about the environmental issues that Malta is currently facing. Plastic waste invariably ends up polluting our beautiful seas.
The Wave of Change Challenge started when a group of young swimming buddies, Neil Agius, Richard Zerafa and Gilbert Bartolo came up with the idea for everyone to pick up three pieces of trash, sharing it on social media and adding the hashtag #waveofchange. This was their way of empowering people to take action through simple efforts.
“The Wave of Change initiative inspires people to take action, reduce the amount of plastic consumption and just be more attentive to each other and the environment around us” Neil Agius, founding member of Wave of Change.
“Yachting Malta’s overall aim is to promote Malta’s leading name, tradition and potential as a yachting destination in the Mediterranean, therefore it is imperative that initiatives like the Wave of Change have our support. Our beautiful seas and their marine life must be protected and people made aware of the impact plastic waste has on them” explained John Huber, Chairman Yachting Malta Ltd. “What these athletes are doing is commendable and they have Yachting Malta’s support. Yachting Malta invites all its stake holders to undertake the challenge. A little input from everyone can go a long way!.
Yachting Malta and Wave of Change invite the general public to sign the Wave of Change pledge. By signing the pledge, you pledge to pick up three pieces of plastic, and to nominate 3 other people or organisations to get involved and protect the places we love. No matter where you are in Malta or around the world, whether you are at the beach or on the street, you can participate.
