Yachting Malta Strengthens Commitment to Sustainability through Power4Med Marina Managers Programme

Yachting Malta recently reinforced its dedication to sustainable yachting practices through its participation in the Power4Med Marina Managers Programme – a key initiative within the broader Power4Med project aimed at accelerating green transformation across the Mediterranean’s maritime sector.

Since its launch in 2020, Yachting Malta’s sustainability strategy has been a central pillar of its operations, promoting environmental responsibility across all facets of the yachting industry. As part of this long-term vision, Yachting Malta joined the Power4Med project in 2023, marking a significant step forward in its collaboration with Mediterranean partners to future-proof marinas and yachting destinations.

The latest engagement saw Yachting Malta’s CEO Michael Mifsud attend a comprehensive series of site visits, meetings, and knowledge-sharing sessions together with a number of local marina representatives. The programme commenced earlier on in the month when upon the delegation’s arrival in Athens, they went on to Nafplion for a visit to the Mediterranean Boat Show. En route, the team made a stop at the Corinth Canal to observe the historical site’s maritime infrastructure and logistical operations.

A highlight of the visit took place on 7th May with a guided tour of D-Marin Zea Marina, arranged by Niki Travers Tauss of D-Marin Marina di Valletta. The Yachting Malta delegation was welcomed by Iannis Koutsodontis, Country CEO for D-Marin, and Konstantina Leontsini, Marina Manager at Zea Marina. The tour showcased a wide array of sustainable innovations, including solar-powered benches, advanced waste separation systems, and energy- and water-saving infrastructure that exemplify best practices in eco-conscious marina design.

Later that day, participants attended a session led by Dr Gregory Yovanof from the Strategis Maritime Centre of Excellence. Discussions centred on the future of sustainable marina operations and the integration of alternative fuels into the maritime and yachting sectors. The group also visited Flisvos Marina, one of the region’s premier facilities, known for its sustainability standards and premium services.

The day concluded with a tour of The Ellinikon, a transformative mixed-use coastal development rising on the grounds of the former Athens airport. The project includes a carbon-neutral marina, extensive green spaces, and smart infrastructure—touted as one of Europe’s most ambitious urban regeneration projects.

During the visit,  the delegation explored other emerging marina developments in the Athens region, further expanding their understanding of current and future sustainability trends before returning to Malta.

“Yachting Malta’s involvement in the Power4Med initiative reflects its ongoing mission to lead by example in driving positive environmental change within the Mediterranean yachting community. The insights gained through this experience will continue to inform Malta’s efforts in adopting innovative, sustainable marina practices that benefit both industry stakeholders and the environment” concluded Yachting Malta’s CEO Michael Mifsud.

Joining Yachting Malta’s Michael Mifsud for the Power4Med Marina Managers’ Programme were Sarah Gauci Carlton (Creek Marina), Candela Aimaro (Grand Harbour Marina), Perica Miloradovic (Manoel Island Marina), Gennaro Xerri (Mgarr Marina), and George Gauci (Roland Marina).
